F* installation:
----------------

Using the VM:
--------------

I have uploaded a Virtual Box Ubuntu Virtual Machine at the following URL:

http://www.cs.umd.edu/~aseem/FStar.ova

Username: fstar
Password: fstar

The VM has F* installed in /home/fstar/FStar/. It is already added in the PATH, so, from the command line, invoking F* as:

<cmd prompt>fstar.exe

should display the F* help options.

There is also a sample F* file, /home/fstar/Test.fst. You should be able to verify it using F* as:

<cmd prompt>fstar.exe Test.fst

It should display the verification successful message.

Along with the F* installation, the VM also has the emacs editor installed in it. F* has a custom emacs plugin (also installed already in the VM) that provides syntax highlighting, incremental verification, symbol query, and other features. See the full details here: https://github.com/FStarLang/fstar-mode.el.

You could open Test.fst in emacs, and try some key bindings as mentioned on the github page above. Since F* is already in PATH, things should work seamlessly.

Using the binaries:
-------------------

If for some reason you are unable to access/download the VM, F* also has binary packages available for Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms here:

https://github.com/FStarLang/FStar/releases/tag/v0.9.5.0

(Scroll down to the Downloads section)

The installation should just involve unzip (or untar) the package. Detailed installation instructions are here:

https://github.com/FStarLang/FStar/blob/master/INSTALL.md#binary-releases

If you use the binaries to install F*, remember to install the emacs editor and the F* mode for emacs. The installation instructions for the F* mode are here:

https://github.com/FStarLang/fstar-mode.el

(Scroll down to the Setup section)

Using the source code:
----------------------

For the school purposes you should not need to do this, but you can also build F* from the source code. This is an elaborate process and involves a lot of things. The instructions are here:

https://github.com/FStarLang/FStar/blob/master/INSTALL.md#building-f-from-sources
